Colorado Pols brings us word of another protest by disabled-rights activists attempting to engage Colorado Republican U.S. Sen. Cory Gardner on his home turf in Yuma – this time, at his house on New Year’s Eve.

The dozen or so protesters got a frosty reception; not from the senator – who was home and stayed inside, according to the event’s organizer, apparently unwilling to take the bait – but from the weather itself as the temps near midnight dipped into the low single digits.

Activist Carrie Ann Lucas, a familiar tormentor of the junior senator’s who managed the effort and had helped get the wheelchair-bound participants to Yuma, posted video of the protest on Facebook. Blogger mamajama55 later interviewed Lucas and wrote about it for Dem-friendly Pols:

On New Year’s Eve 2017, Senator Cory Gardner of Colorado had some unexpected visitors outside his home in Yuma, Colorado. Twelve protesters and supporters from Atlantis ADAPT  braved the bitter cold to hold a “house party” on the sidewalk outside Gardner’s home, asking for him to come out and talk with them about how the tax legislation he supported would affect their lives. …

…Senator Gardner declined to party with the protesters, and never spoke with them, although, according to a police officer in the video, he was at home at the time.

Lucas tells the blogger, in part:

We wanted to have a dialogue with Sen Gardner to prevent Medicaid cuts that are so harmful to disabled Coloradans and to get a commitment to co-sponsor the Disability Integration Act … (which) will ensure that all disabled people and seniors have the right to receive support services in their own homes, rather than institutional settings such as nursing homes.

… We will continue to try to dialogue with him until he either starts representing the people of Colorado, or he is voted out of office.

Whether or not they accomplish that goal at some point, they weren’t about to lure Gardner out of his house and into the fray; He evidently was determined to spend the holiday with family. Maybe, dare we hope, even foregoing politics altogether for the evening.
