The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel: Protectionism, politics and policy

Thursday’s repeal of net neutrality rules by the Federal Communication Commission is the latest example of the Trump administration’s deregulation mantra – competition in the free market is good for consumers – put into action.

But the president’s deregulatory agenda can’t always co-exist with his penchant for economic nationalism. If he really thinks competition is good for consumers, he wouldn’t consider imposing tariffs on solar power equipment made overseas.

Western Colorado businesses that are flourishing under an existing trade scheme are worried that any meddling will hurt them, their workers, green-minded homebuyers and electrical utility ratepayers.
