U.S. House passes Rep. Scott Tipton’s bill to rename peaks for Charlie Fowler, Christine Boskoff

Colorado Politics told you back in May that members of the state’s congressional delegation hope to name two peaks to honor famous climbers Charlie Fowler and Christine Boskoff, who called Norwood home before they died in an avalanche in Tibet in 2006.

U.S. Rep. Scott Tipton’s bill would name mountains on the border of San Miguel and Dolores counties Fowler Peak and Boskoff Peak. The bill passed 409-0 Tuesday.

“Charlie Fowler and Christine Boskoff were celebrated mountaineers, but they were also known for their tireless advocacy for human rights, dedication to philanthropy, and stewardship of the environment,” Tipton, a Republican from Cortez, said in a statement. “Through the designation of these peaks, their legacy and life’s work will live on for generations to come.”

U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet, a Democrat from Denver, has an identical bill in the Senate. Sen. Cory Gardner, a Republican from Yuma, is a co-sponsor. Their bill was heard by the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Subcommittee on Public Lands, Forests and Mining in July.

When the pair went missing while attempting to summit Genyen Peak in Tibet 11 years ago, it was international news. Boskoff and Fowler had many of the world’s tallest peaks and considered among the best in the world, in addition to their work with charities working for the rights of porters and Sherpas, literacy and gender equality.

Fowler was 52 and Boskoff was 39.

Fowler’s body was found on Dec. 27, 2006, weeks after he and Boskoff were reported missing. Boskoff’s body was located on July 9, 2007, but it took another month to retrieve because of its perilous location.

As we told you a few months ago, the naming the unnamed 13,000-foot peaks is being pushed by a coalition of Colorado outdoors groups – The Access Fund, the American Alpine Club, the American Mountain Guides Associations, the Colorado Mountain Club, the Mountain Film Board of Directors, Osprey Packs, Dolores County Commissioners, Telluride Ski & Golf Resort and the Wright Stuff Community Foundation.
