The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel editorial: D51 teacher gets her moment in the sun

“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”

The origins of this quote are murky, but we’ve all heard it before. Few of us are fortunate enough to live it. In Felicia Casto’s case, she just picked up a $25,000 check by regarding her 14-year teaching career as a calling instead of a job.

Casto was chosen for the National Milken Educator Award, a recognition that distinguishes her as a top teacher in the country. Thirty-five teachers in the nation are selected for the award every year. She is the first District 51 educator to be recognized since 2002.

Like any other top-flight professional in a crowded field, Casto’s passion for her vocation is intrinsic. It’s not motivated by recognition or laurels. It’s simply an expression of someone who found her purpose in life.
