VIDEO: Senate GOP has high hopes for small biz (and good news on bat guano)

The bat poop in Walsenburg has been taken care of, state Senate Republicans have been assured.

That’s the breaking news in the caucus’ first video message.

Sen. Tim Neville delivered the address. He outlined the GOP platform, which is braced by a one-seat majority in the upper chamber.

Funding transportation, curbing construction defects lawsuits, ending the state health exchange and providing regulatory reform topped the agenda.

“Chief Justice (Nancy) Rice came in and put us all to ease that the bat guano problem in Walsenburg has been taken care of,” said Neville, rocking back and chuckling. “I’m sure you all were concerned about that.”

Last week, his son, Republican House leader Patrick Neville, delivered the first weekly address for his chamber.

The elder Neville promised his Senate Bill 1 would provide “a different look and culture when it comes to dealing with our businesses at the state level, particularly our small business.”

“Instead of it being a situation where we’re going to penalize businesses, we’re going to make sure they’re familiar with regulations, and if there is a minor regulatory issue, we will be looking at having that office actually talk to that business, explain it and provide an opportunity for a cure, as opposed to a fine, so they can move forward and continue building their business and employing more Colorado citizens,” he said.

The influential Senate Republican critiqued Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper’s State of the State address Thursday. But he also heard things he liked.

“He did highlight a need for us to take more control at the state level, which our party definitely welcomes and we look forward to,” Neville said. “Of course we’ll continue moving forward and working with the other party across the aisle where we can.”

What's in a word? In politics, very little

As a largely unskilled person who’s pulled 30 years’ worth of paychecks at the word factory, it grieves me to break this to you. Words have never been cheaper. In politics, they’re a penny stock. Some words still matter. “I promise.” “I do.” “Roll Tide.” “Extra chili.” The political lexicon, however, has been sinking in […]

Rep. Justin Everett calls Democrats' olive branch 'bunk'

If you want a straight answer, see Justin Everett, the Republican from Littleton who has no political filter. His view on Democrats’ pledges to make transportation a priority can be summed up in one word: “Bunk.” After Gov. John Hickenlooper’ State of the State message last Thursday, most seemed, well, giddy that Democrats were ready […]
