The National Journal website credited U.S. Rep. Mike Coffman of Aurora with running one of the best campaigns in the country leading up to last month’s elections.

The Republican Coffman won a fifth term over Democratic state Sen. Morgan Carroll in the 6th Congressional District in east metro Denver, a district heavy with Democrats and minorities in a year in which Donald Trump led the the ticket.

Coffman beat the worthy adversary by 8 percentage points, just two years after walloping former House Speaker Andrew Romanoff by 9. Privately, Democrats and Republicans have speculated that it could be difficult to find a future candidate capable and willing to take on Coffman after two stellar Democrats fared so poorly-spanning both a midterm election, when Democrats tend to underperform in Colorado, and this year’s general election.

The National Journal observed:

Coff­man has long been the mod­el of how House Re­pub­lic­ans win cam­paigns by ap­peal­ing to voters out­side the GOP base. He taught him­self Span­ish so he could bet­ter ap­peal to His­pan­ic voters in a re­drawn dis­trict after 2012. In two elec­tions since, he’s faced two of the top Demo­crat­ic re­cruits in the coun­try. And in both elec­tions, he’s coas­ted to vic­tory-by 9 points in a sub­urb­an Den­ver dis­trict that com­fort­ably backed Clin­ton.

Coffman had a political all-star team working on his campaign, led by campaign manager Cinamon Watson, consultant and senior strategist Josh Penry, financial director Kristin Strohm, deputy finance director Natalie Tabor and political director J.D. Key, along with Liesl Hickey and Chad Scarborough, partners at Patchwork Creative, the producers of his TV ads..

Others on the National Journal’s “10 Best Congressional Campaigns of 2016” were four Democrats-Sen.-elect Mag­gie Has­san of New Hamp­shire and Reps. Stephanie Murphy of Flor­ida, Rick No­lan of Min­nesota and  Josh Got­theimer of New Jer­sey. The list includes five other Republicans -Sens, Rob Port­man of Ohio, Ron John­son of Wis­con­sin and Marco Ru­bio of Flor­ida, along with Reps. Bar­bara Com­stock of Vir­gin­ia and Erik Paulsen of Min­nesota.
