New House rep gets rude awakening: a hate crime in her district
All politics is local to Leslie Herod, elected last week to represent state House District 8 in northeast and central Denver, where a transgender woman discovered Wednesday she was a victim of death threats and vandalism over her opposition to Donald Trump.
“This conduct is reprehensible, and I am outraged that this has happened in our community,” Herod said Wednesday afternoon. “Transgender people are a valuable part of our community. They are already marginalized and these actions create anxiety and fear. Hate crimes are unacceptable and have no place in our society.”
Ashley Dean of the website Denverite reported Wednesday morning that Amber Timmons, who earlier had written “love trumps hate” and “not my president” in temporary marker on the windows of her sport-utility vehicle outside her home in Cheesman Park, discovered the spray-painted retribution.
Someone used black spray paint to write “fag die he she” along the driver’s side of her SUV and “die” next to a swastika on the back.
“Trump” was painted across the hood.
Dean reported that others, however, left notes expressing support for Timmons tucked in the window seals.
“You don’t fight hate with hate,” Timmons told Denverite. “You fight it with love.”
