A rising star in U.S. Senate, Gardner on track for ‘plum gig’
Colorado’s political whiz kid, U.S. Sen. Cory Gardner, is taking his skills nationally, Politico reported Tuesday.
Gardner appears destined to be the chairman of the the National Republican Senatorial Committee for the 2018 elections when Senate leadership elections happen next week, sources told the website.
The senator and former House member from Yuma beat incumbent Democrat Mark Udall in 2014.
“But Gardner is well-liked among his colleagues, giving him a leg-up for the plum gig,” Politico reported.
The website noted his background from a swing state, and in Colorado he has been hailed for his bipartisan work with Democratic senior U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet of Denver.
On the other hand, his relationship with President-elect Donald Trump has been strained. Gardner even called the new president a “buffoon” back in December before tepidly endorsing him this year. A month ago, Gardner called for Trump to drop out of the presidential race after a 1995 tape of Trump making sexually aggressive comments about women came to light.
