Colorado police groups endorse Trump

Law enforcement groups in Denver, Aurora and Colorado Springs have endorsed Donald Trump for president, the Trump-Pence Colorado campaign announced Monday, Oct. 3

The campaign issued statements of support for the Republican candidate from the Denver Police Protective Association, Aurora Police Association and Colorado Springs Police Protective Association.

Trump has criticized Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton as anti-law enforcement. Clinton did not seek the endorsement of the national Fraternal Order of Police, but has met with several major-city law enforcement officials as a sign of support for police and other agencies.

The Denver Police Protective Association represents about 1,400 Denver police officers.

“After thoughtful consideration, we wholeheartedly believe Mr. Trump is the only candidate that will protect law-abiding citizens from those who choose to break the law,” association President Nick Rogers said in the Trump campaign statement. “Mr. Trump’s strong support for law enforcement will help Make America Safe Again.”

Bob Wesner, Aurora Police Association president, said the Aurora group believes Trump’s strong support for law enforcement “will ensure safer communities in Colorado and across our country.”

“Aurora has already experienced tragedy through the Century 16 theater shooting and knows firsthand what it means to have leaders and first responders who act quickly to protect our communities,” Wesner said. “President Trump will support law enforcement and help keep the City of Aurora, the State of Colorado and the United States safe and secure.”

The board of directors of the Colorado Springs Police Protective Association unanimously voted to endorse Trump for president, President Mike Singels and Executive Director Sherryl Dillon said in the statement.

“Donald Trump’s decisive commitment to both the safety of our citizens and respect for members of the law enforcement community are the motivating factors in providing this endorsement,” Singels and Dillon added. “We believe Mr. Trump represents the best interests of all Americans.”

The Colorado Springs Police Protective Association represents more than 850 members.

Patrick Davis, Colorado senior adviser to the Trump-Pence campaign, said Trump stands for tougher law enforcement and safer communities, “and these endorsements demonstrate that the brave policemen and women in Colorado agree with Mr. Trump’s goal of making America Safe Again. We are honored to have their support and will work with them to get Mr. Trump’s message of protecting our communities out to Colorado voters in the coming weeks.”
