Letter: Dems should look beyond tax hikes to fix I-70 problems
Editor:
The story by David O. Williams on transportation issues and Interstate 70 didn’t include some relevant history. I-70 traffic has been bad for years without solution. In 2008 there were two different ballot measures that proposed putting money into addressing the problem. Both failed statewide by more than one-third of a million votes.
Rep. Diane Mitsch Bush represents Eagle and Routt counties. Both counties supported Amendment 58, but opposed Amendment 52. Her constituents, it seems, had mixed opinions.
Look at other Western Slope counties (Garfield, Grand, Moffat and Summit). All opposed Amendment 52. Only Summit (by about 1,200 votes) backed Amendment 58.
A tax hike — helping the Western Slope — wasn’t widely supported by Western Slope voters. In a very liberal election year.
A partisan divide here? Perhaps, but Sen. Randy Baumgardner reflects Western Slope voters’ opinions. Colorado Democrats should look beyond their favorite solution of sticking it to the taxpayers.
