Letter: Outside money from both sides in Jeffco school races
Editor:
Why in your Oct. 2 article on the Jeffco School Board election were some who support the recall shocked over outside money that may have come into this election? There is hardly an election anymore that does not involve some outside money. The recall effort itself has had a large amount of funding from outside sources, including the national teachers union and others. Paid signature gatherers, who seemed to have no idea about the issues, canvased our neighborhoods seeking signatures. Anyone who thinks this is totally a grassroots effort had better take a closer look at the total funding and participation in the recall. The Koch brothers fund about 10 percent of Americans For Prosperity, so why are they the only names that seem to be associated with AFP? Most of AFP’s work here in Colorado is done by volunteers. Having a difference of opinion does not make someone evil. AFP’s platform supports a different view of progress than the Colorado Education Association; that, in itself, should not make them any better or worse.
The fight for and against the school board involves both local and outside interests. This should not surprise anyone. The teacher’s association started this fight before the first meeting of the current board. Does this seem like a totally grassroots effort? The current board has challenged the status quo and this makes many uncomfortable. Should they not be asking themselves, why?
