Gabby Giffords set to talk gun safety with Michael Bennet, Colorado Dems at town hall in 8th CD
Gabby Giffords, founder of the national gun-control advocacy organization that bears her name, plans to join Colorado’s senior U.S. senator and state Democratic Party chair next week for a panel discussion about federal gun violence prevention policies at a town hall in the district represented by the state’s most vulnerable Republican.
U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet and Colorado Democratic Party Chair Shad Murib are set to appear on stage with Giffords at 7 p.m. on Aug. 6 at an undisclosed location in the Adams County portion of the 8th Congressional District, where U.S. Rep. Gabe Evans is running for a second term in next year’s election, state Democrats said. State House Minority Leader Monica Duran, D-Wheat Ridge, is also expected to be on hand.
A former Democratic congresswoman from Arizona, Giffords survived a 2011 assassination attempt at a constituent outreach event in a mass shooting that left six dead and 18 wounded. She co-founded Giffords, a national group that pushes gun-safety measures. She’s married to Democratic U.S. Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona and has headlined events in Colorado multiple times in the last decade.
Evans, a former Arvada police officer, landed on top of a list of the country’s most vulnerable House incumbents last week.
The Republican defeated Democratic incumbent Yadira Caraveo last fall by less than a percentage-point margin in the nearly evenly divided district, which stretches from Adams County suburbs north of Denver up to Greeley in Weld County.
Caraveo is one of seven Democrats running in a primary for the nomination to challenge Evans.
State Democrats said the Aug. 6 town hall will cover “the urgent need for federal action on gun safety and the growing threat posed by extremist Republicans,” including Evans.
The party said the event’s location will be provided to attendees after they RSVP.
