They also received commemorative pieces by artist Agnes Ma.

Campbell will use his money to create stage productions celebrating the stories of Black pioneers in the American West. Smith’s project seeks to foster a renewed sense of community and empowerment through storytelling. Kaiah will engage participants in traditional hide work, preserving and sharing indigenous cultural practices.

“This inaugural award celebrates artists whose work goes beyond the canvas or state to touch lives and unite communities,” said Gary Steuer, president and chief executive officer of the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation. “Our honorees’ projects showcase the transformative power of art, and we’re proud to support them as they pave the way for a brighter future.”

Tariana Navas-Nieves, deputy director of Denver Arts & Venues, added: “Honoring these artists is a testament to Denver’s commitment to social equity and creative expression. Their work brings life to the diverse stories of our city and encourages us all to envision a more inclusive future.”

“Art has the extraordinary power to spark dialogue, inspire action, and drive meaningful change,” said Denver Mayor Mike Johnston. “Through their work, artists like Jeff, Suzi, and Chelsea help us see beyond today’s challenges to the possibilities of tomorrow.”

The awards were presented at a Nov. 19 celebration held in the Studio Loft at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House. Former Bonfils-Stanton Foundation trustee Elaine Torres, director of community and strategic partnerships at CBS Colorado, was the mistress of ceremonies for the evening, which also included music by Jae Wes.
