Former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson defended his endorsement of Donald Trump in the 2024 election.

Carson appeared on Sunday Morning Futures to offer an explanation, as Trump’s former cabinet member, with eight candidates currently vying for the Republican nomination a year out from the election.

“Well, I think any objective person recognizes that during the Trump administration and the pre-Covid days we had a booming economy,” Carson said. “We had a secure border. We had energy independence. We had record low unemployment. We had hope for the future. We had respect in the world.”

The retired neurosurgeon went on to suggest that more voters are also coming around to the Republican Party, including African American voters.

“There was a time, you know, a few years ago when I would go to a conservative gatherings, and I would be the only black face there,” Carson said. “Now, there are lots of black faces, particularly black males, who have looked at some of the things that we’ve done during the previous administration and recognize that those things were beneficial to them and their communities.”

Trump is facing off against Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), Gov. Doug Burgum (R-ND), entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, and former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson in the race for the Republican nomination.

President Joe Biden is also running for reelection and faces opposition in the Democratic presidential campaign from Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN), news anchor Cenk Uyghur, and author Marianne Williamson.
