Denver’s second sanctioned homeless camp set to open Dec. 17

Officials in charge of operating Denver’s second sanctioned homeless camp say they are aiming to open by Dec. 17

The camp will be at the Denver Community Church at 1595 Pearl St. in Denver’s Uptown neighborhood and will house at least 10 more people than the original sanctioned camp.

Inside of the camp will be 30 tents that will temporally be the home to up to 40 men, women and couples, including people identifying as transgender and pet owners, said Cole Chandler, the executive director for Colorado Village Collaborative.

The CVC is a nonprofit organization that will be in charge of day-to-day operations at the camp.

Similarly to the first camp CVC will have workers on-site 24-hours a day to assure their strict no drug or alcohol, no violence and no visitor policies are being followed, Chandler said.

The opening will come just more than a week after the first camp opened at the First Baptist Church at 1373 N. Grant St. where only women and transgendered people are permitted.

Last week, Denver’s Community Planning and Development Department issued a temporary zoning permit for the camp at the church.

Chandler said CVC is currently doing outreach work with the homeless population that has camped out in the nearby area of the new camp.

Radian Inc. project designer Grey Waletich, left, shows Interfaith Alliance consultant Jennifer Lopez the inside of one of the tents set up in the parking lot at First Baptist Church in Denver’s Capitol Hill neighborhood on Friday, Dec. 4, 2020. The tents, part of Denver’s first Safe Outdoor Space, will house up to 30 women and trans-identifying individuals in response to the growing number of people sheltering outdoors because of the coronavirus pandemic.
