The Federal Bureau of Investigation warns that scammers are using the Denver division’s phone number to coerce money from unsuspecting call recipients.

“The caller will oftentimes know the full name, extensive background, birth date, family members, and/or personal cell phone number of the intended victim,” the FBI said in a statement.

Residents of Colorado and Wyoming have received calls from the Denver division’s real phone number – 303-629-7171 – but the FBI did not initiate the calls. Instead, someone impersonating a government worker would demand payment, sometimes threatening arrest.

Other tactics included telling the victim that their social security number is compromised and they must transfer their funds to an account provided by the scammer.

The FBI does not make phone calls requesting money.

So far, 12,000 people have been victims of government impersonation scams this year, according to the Bureau, losing a collective $112 million.

The FBI’s warning comes one week after the Denver sheriff announced a similar scam with an impersonator claiming to be a sheriff’s deputy. Like its federal counterpart, the Denver sheriff’s office does not call people asking for money.
