Our first instinct, after hearing that weeds had been pulled from an overgrown yard on the East Side, was to heap praise on the four volunteers who did the work.
As The Pueblo Chieftain reported a few days ago, an abandoned property in the neighborhood was taking on the look of the Amazon rain forest, with some weeds as high as 9 feet. Manuel Aguilar, who lives next door, was worried that the property could present a safety hazard, particularly after the weeds dried out and became more of a fire risk.
So a group of volunteers from the Eastside Action Support Team took it upon themselves to spend part of last Sunday doing the back-breaking work of clearing the property’s front yard of weeds. Those volunteers showed initiative and concern for their community, which is admirable.
