The Pueblo Chieftain: Put brakes on jail plans
It isn’t easy to take positions that are in disagreement with people we respect and admire. Having said that, we’re respectfully asking Pueblo County Commission Chairman Garrison Ortiz and Pueblo County Sheriff Kirk Taylor not to move forward this year with two ballot initiatives designed to provide funding for a new jail.
The County Commission could vote Tuesday on two separate initiatives, one that would increase sales taxes to fund the new jail and another that would lower excise tax rates on marijuana while raising retail sales tax rates on the drug.
Ortiz and Taylor have taken the lead in calling for both initiatives to be placed before voters on the November ballot. Both are good men whose hearts we believe are truly in the right place. And we agree with their underlying concern about overcrowding and unsafe conditions at the Pueblo County Jail.
