Hick celebrates birthday with New York fundraiser

Happy birthday to former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper.

This year he won’t be ringing in the milestone with a pint of beer craft brewed in LoDo or accepting a toast at his home in the Mile High City, where he once was mayor.

He’ll be feted for his 67th birthday in midtown Manhattan in New York City.

Though he still hasn’t officially announced he’s running for president, those who attend the party are expected to pony up $500 to $5,000 each for his Giddy Up PAC, according to the invitation CNBC got its hands on.

An email CNBC has says, “After having finished his tenure of 16 years of public service in Colorado (eight years as Mayor of Denver and eight as governor), Hickenlooper is exploring his next steps to figure out if there is a path for him to help re-orient the nation’s politics by solving problems together.”

His PAC, so far, has collected about $600,000 and spent about half that, and its website is pretty bare at this critical juncture.

“Founded by former Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper, Giddy Up PAC seeks to expand Colorado’s success nationwide. By investing in leaders and ideas, Giddy Up will take a collaborative and bipartisan approach to solving the country’s toughest shared challenges.”

For comparison, Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts has raised about $35 million and spent $24 million.

Giddy up, indeed.

Hickenlooper has toyed with the race for months, but now he’s traveling the early voter states to see if he can carve out a niche that might create a message and lead to a path to becoming the Democratic nominee.

An affable centrist who has embraced oil and gas development, as well as partisan compromises, Hickenlooper doesn’t exactly shine in the moment of the party’s Green New Deal, wealth redistribution and fierce willingness to battle with President Trump. Hickenlooper can only tangentially embody the cause of women’s right. He’s a middle-aged Caucasian from a cowboy state with bad traffic.

A spokeswoman for PAC wouldn’t tell CNBC who was attending Hick’s Big Apple bash.
