The Pueblo Chieftain: A new day in Denver

We’ve heard the complaint many times before. In fact, we’re sometimes the ones making the complaint. That is, the Colorado Legislature often seems to forget that Pueblo and other parts of Southern Colorado exist.

It’ll be tougher for legislators from other parts of the state to adopt that attitude this year, though. The new legislative session has begun with Sen. Leroy Garcia presiding as Colorado Senate president and Rep. Daneya Esgar serving on the powerful Joint Budget Committee.

You’d have to go back a long way to find a time when Pueblo residents have had such a potent one-two punch in the state Capitol. Esgar is the first Puebloan to serve on the JBC in almost a decade. And before Garcia, Pueblo hadn’t had a senator wielding the president’s gavel since 1950.
