The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel: Shutdown lunacy grows

In normal times, given the devastation that occurred as a result of last year’s wildfires, government personnel would be spending this winter implementing measures to reduce the threat of the upcoming fire season.

But these aren’t normal times. The State Forest Service is doing what it can, but with federal fire officials sidelined during the government shutdown, the team effort needed to fully prepare for the fire season is falling short. As the Sentinel’s Dennis Webb reported in Wednesday’s edition, some firefighter training, prescribed burns and healthy forest programs are on hold, putting firefighting agencies behind where they should be to avoid a repeat of 2018’s scorching fires.
