Rep. Leslie Herod named a ‘Maverick Thinker’ by Urban Peak

State Rep. Leslie Herod is Urban Peak’s Individual Maverick Thinker for 2018, an award that recognizes the considerable difference she’s made in the lives of homeless youth in Denver.

“The importance of Rep. Herod’s support for Urban Peak cannot be overstated,” Christina Carlson, Urban Peak’s CEO, said in a statement. “Leslie has been our champion, advocating for Urban Peak at the Capitol and in our community. She has fought relentlessly for homeless youth, lifting them up and recognizing their potential to be self-sufficient young adults who contribute greatly to our community.

“Today, Urban Peak is stronger and thriving because of her good work and her commitment to our vision of ending youth homelessness.”

The Democratic lawmaker from Denver will receive award at a fundraising dinner on April 5 in the Seawell Ballroom at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are on sale now and cost $150 each.

The reception and dinner also well honor Bank of America as this year’s Business Maverick Thinker, as well as a Youth Maverick Thinker to be announced at the event. Last year the dinner raised $400,000 for the largest Front Range non-profit providing services to those 15 through 24 years old who are homeless or at imminent risk of becoming homeless.

Herod is a longtime supporter and Urban Peak former board member who served eight years. Last year, she passed House Bill 1055 creating an income tax return check-off to support Urban Peak.

“Urban Peak serves thousands of our most vulnerable youth who have nowhere else to turn for support,” Herod said in a statement. “Urban Peak gives young people, who often feel invisible, an opportunity to reach their full potential.”

The fundraiser is sponsored by The Anschutz Foundation, Dick and Karen Thomas, Davita and Alpine Lumber.
