Vice President Mike Pence and his wife, Karen, are spending the week in the Aspen area on vacation, The Aspen Times reported, bringing heavy security and some traffic delays to some of Colorado’s ritziest mountain communities.

A motorcade bearing the Pences made the journey from Eagle County and its airport near Vail to a residence the Aspen Daily News described as “a palatial spread off Owl Creek Road” in Snowmass Village on Tuesday afternoon. Along the way, a helicopter flew overhead and local law enforcement officials were on alert. According to the Times, a Federal Aviation Administration document says the vice president plans to depart on Jan. 1 from either the Aspen or Vail airports.

Pitkin County Sheriff Joe DiSalvo told the Times his officers were ready to help out the Secret Service, as it has when Pence and members of the Trump family visited Aspen earlier this year.

“We are doing what we always do,” the sheriff told the newspaper. “I do consider the Secret Service another law-enforcement agency, and who they protect doesn’t matter. We’re helping the Secret Service, not the vice president.”

In March, President Donald Trump’s three oldest children, Donald Jr., Eric and Ivanka, along with their spouses and eight presidential grandchildren, descended on Aspen for spring break along with what a local newspaper said would be “about 100 Secret Service agents.”

Pence has been a regular visitor to Aspen for meetings of the Republican Governors Association.

Before Christmas, the Pences welcomed what the White House said was more than 2,000 members of the United States Armed Forces, the Secret Service and their families to the Vice President’s Residence at the Naval Observatory to celebrate the holidays and thank them for their service.

Pence made an unannounced trip to Afghanistan at the end of last week to visit with Afghan officials and U.S. troops.
