The Emmys may have come and gone, but the television award season isn’t quite over with Denver collecting a slew of awards for its municipal TV channel, Denver 8.

The channel – available online and over the air with programming on city government meetings and Denver culture – earned five Best-in-the-Nation Awards for locally produced, original programming by the National Association of Telecommunication Officers and Advisors (NATOA).

Denver 8 garnered the accolades for its eclectic range of programming including “Love This Place,” a profile of the Denver Fire Department called “Rolling Hot – Denver Fire” and coverage of city government including Denver City Council.

Election coverage through “Denver Decides” was also recognized as well as the city’s documentary of local My Brother’s Keeper efforts in “Courage to Care.”

All told, Denver 8 was recognized in 11 different categories, garnering some 13 nominations at the annual Government Programming Awards competition. Denver came home with five first-place, two second-place and four third-place awards and three honorable mentions.

The NATOA GPA competition pits like-sized cities against each other to match up their best programs in over 60 categories.

Denver 8’s awards were for video programming in several categories including ethnic experience, public education, magazine-style show, sports programming, and public/community meetings and live coverage.
