Boulder’s DA Stan Garnett may mount a bid for state attorney general

We no sooner reported state Democratic Rep. Joe Salazar’s announcement he will run for Colorado attorney general the other day than the Boulder Daily Camera followed with news that longtime Boulder County District Attorney Stan Garnett had filed paperwork for a second attempt at the AG’s post. The veteran Democratic prosecutor previously had unsuccessfully challenged then-incumbent Republican Attorney General John Suthers for the job in 2010.

Incumbent Republican Attorney General Cynthia Coffman already has filed paperwork for a re-election bid although, as the Camera points out in its report, she may wind up as a gubernatorial contender in 2018.

Here’s more from the Camera:

Garnett, a Boulder Democrat who just started his third term as the district attorney in Colorado’s 20th Judicial District, could not immediately be reached for comment on Friday night.

According to the Colorado Secretary of State’s website, however, Garnett filed his candidate affidavit on Thursday.

Denver TV station Fox 31 reported on Friday night that Garnett had emphasized that he had not made a final decision about running but had filed the paperwork “for legal reasons.”
