LGBTQ Lobby Day at the Capitol to address transgender rights

Monday is LGBTQ Lobby Day at the state Capitol, and you can bet transgender rights will be a topic of conversations between advocates and lawmakers.

President Trump on Wednesday removed federal protections that allow transgender students to choose the restroom or locker room to match their gender identity.

Transgender rights are the year’s major issue for One Colorado, the state’s largest advocacy organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer Coloradans and their families.

One Colorado organizes LGBTQ Lobby Day, which starts at 8:30 a.m. at Central Presbyterian Church at 1660 Sherman St., about a block north of the Capitol.

LGBTQ advocates will rally around House Bill 1122, which would make it easier for transgender people to change the gender on his or her birth certificate.

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Daneya Esgar of Pueblo and Sen. Dominick Moreno of Commerce City, is scheduled for its first hearing in the House Judiciary Committee on March 9.

Advocates also will press for House Bill 1156 to ban conversion therapy for minors by licensed mental health professionals. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Paul Rosenthal of Denver and Sen. Steve Fenberg of Boulder, has passed the Democratic majority in the House and died in the Republican-led Senate the past two years.

The legislation is up for its first hearing Tuesday afternoon before the House Public Health Care and Human Services Committee.

Participants will receive training about talking to legislators at a lunch-time panel with the Legislature’s LGBTQ Caucus.

“LGBTQ Lobby Day is a great opportunity for participants to learn more about what issues impact LGBTQ Coloradans, as well as a chance to meet in-person with their state legislators and tell their stories,” said Daniel Ramos, the executive director of One Colorado.

“This is sure to be our biggest Lobby Day since the organization began in 2010. The only way we can shape the future of equality in Colorado is by making sure our elected representatives hear from each one of us.”

Anyone who wants to participate in LGBTQ Lobby Day is welcome, says One Colorado.

More than 400 LGBTQ supporters are expected.
