Colorado’s voter registration database was unavailable to elections officials statewide for 29 minutes Tuesday afternoon, but was reported to be back online and available as Election Day proceeded.

Secretary of State spokeswoman Lynn Bartels said on her Twitter account that the database – which allows county elections officials to check voter registration records and whether a ballot has been cast for a voter – went down at 2:47 p.m. and was back up at 3:16 p.m. Officials were investigating the cause, she added.

“Unfortunately, our system goes down now and then,” Bartels tweeted. “It (did) today and we regret that but I am told it is back up.”

If the system is down, county elections staff can not verify voter signatures to process mail-in ballots, she added. Voters who cast ballots in person at voter service centers during the outage could cast provisional ballots, Bartels said.

The Secretary of State also released updated numbers of voters who had turned in ballots. As of 2:11 p.m., 2.4 million ballots were returned. That included 836,151 Republican, 800,085 Democrat and  730,433 unaffiliated ballots.
