In a Colorado Capitol run by Democrats, President Donald Trump's official portrait will be hung with honor this summer.

Former Colorado Senate President Kevin Grantham, the Republican from Cañon City, led the campaign to raise $10,884 through GoFundMe to commission the portrait, which will debut Aug. 1.

The piece will hang alongside other presidents in the Capitol rotunda.

The fund drive was actually kicked off by liberals. Last year, operatives set up a portrait of Russian President Vladimir Putin near the blank spot for Trump's portrait.

The liberal advocacy group ProgressNow later accepted responsibility for the prank and a House aide was disciplined for allowing them access to the building after hours.

So Trump has liberals to thank for his honor in Colorado.

Details of the Aug. 1 ceremony will be announced later, and organizers are still holding out hope to attract a member of the first family to Colorado for the event.

But no luck so far, Grantham said.

"The unveiling of a presidential portrait is about more than just a person — it's about an institution, it's about the perseverance of our constitutional republic," he said.

"Regardless of your party affiliation or your vote in the 2016 election, I hope Colorado will come together to honor the Capitol building and all that the presidential portrait gallery represents."
