A Democratic challenger has her sights set on beating House Republican leader Patrick Neville of Castle Rock in next year's House District 45 race.

Neville has not yet filed paperwork to run for his fourth and final two-year term, under Colorado's term limits.

Katie Barrett, a teacher who's also an "accomplished sport shooter," according to her campaign, plans to call out Neville for the Republican's position on guns, the GOP's attempt this year to recall Democratic legislators and his brother's involvement with the House GOP caucus campaign fundraising.

“I’m running because our current representative is too busy supporting costly recall elections and focusing on divisive issues," Barrett said in a statement. "He’s not representing the people who elected him.”

Neville could not be reached for a response.

Barrett continued, “HD45 is unique, we’re independent and we need a strong voice in the legislature. I want to represent all citizens of this district, and in the next year and a half I will be working hard to meet with as many voters as I can.”

Barrett said she would focus providing more resources for schools and transportation, as well as addressing the costs of healthcare.

“Healthcare costs are skyrocketing right now,” she stated. “Families shouldn’t be forced into bankruptcy because of an unexpected illness.”

The conservative-leaning district includes Castle Rock, Castle Pines, Pradera, The Pinery and southern Parker.
