After a series of setbacks, it looks like Pueblo will be getting a temporary shelter for the homeless next week. Barring another unforeseen hitch, a warehouse-turned-shelter at 901 W. Ninth St. will open Monday or Tuesday.
That’s certainly a welcome step. With temperatures dipping into the teens on some nights already this fall, there’s a real life-and-death risk for people who are forced to sleep outside. This shelter, operated by the Pueblo Rescue Mission staff, should provide an alternative to that fate through April of next year.
For city officials, this really isn’t a long-term answer. Last spring, you’ll recall, the Rescue Mission closed the shelter it had been operating at West 13th Street. Since then, it’s been a scramble to find a stopgap solution to meet the needs of the homeless.
