It's nearly impossible to point out the impact of vagrancy without sounding heartless and cruel — a point made clear in a recent letter to the editor chiding the Sentinel for characterizing the problem as a "stain" on the community.

We appreciate the letter writer's sentiments. "If you don't like the realities of poverty, then support those programs that help the poor and the homeless," she wrote.

We couldn't agree more, which is why we publish stories about people who make the successful transition from being homeless to self-sufficient. On Christmas Day we shared a story about a 35-year-old mother of three boys who had just moved into Pathways Village after bouncing between the Homeward Bound homeless shelter and crashing with others since arriving in Grand Junction from Wyoming.
