Walt Bassett, a longtime business and civic leader in Pueblo, has died at the age of 82. He owned and operated Bassett Construction Co. for 42 years and was active in efforts to bring more jobs and businesses here through his involvement in the Pueblo Economic Development Corp.

Bassett was on a team of civic-minded Pueblo businessmen who campaigned successfully for a half-cent sales tax for economic development in 1982. It was a novel idea at the time to ask voters to tax themselves, which they did in response to major local job losses in the 1980s.
