Just more than half of Americans think the President Trump should be impeached and removed from office.
Fox News polled 1,003 registered voters across the U.S. by phone from Oct. 6-8 and released the results on Wednesday. It is the first Fox News poll conducted since allegations surfaced that Trump oversaw a quid pro quo deal with Ukraine to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden in return for U.S. military aid.
At 51%, just more than half of the respondents said that Trump should be impeached and removed from office, with 43% saying that Trump should stay and 6% unsure.
Respondents were also asked how troubling the allegations and evidence against Trump is, with 51% saying the situation is very or extremely troubling and 44% saying the situation is somewhat or not at all troubling. Five percent of respondents were unsure.
Trump has alleged that Biden withheld $1 billion in loan guarantees from Ukraine while vice president in order to save his son, Hunter, from being investigated for corrupt dealings while sitting on the board of a Ukrainian gas company.
The poll asked respondents how troubling they saw Biden's situation and 36% said very or extremely troubling, 58% said somewhat or not at all, and 6% said they did not know.
Several polls published since House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced the start of an impeachment inquiry on Sept. 24 show support for impeachment has shifted significantly from earlier this year. The public is now more closely divided after earlier polls showed majority opposition to impeachment.
A Washington Post-Schar School survey conducted in early October shows 58% of Americans are supportive of the decision by Congress to initiate an impeachment inquiry, including 49% who say Congress was right to begin an investigation and should also take the next step to remove Trump from office. Earlier this year, Post-ABC polls found less than half saying Congress should begin impeachment proceedings.
And polls show that the shift was closely tied to Pelosi's announcement of the inquiry. An early October poll from Quinnipiac University finds 45% of voters say Trump should be impeached and removed from office, up from 37% in a poll conducted immediately before that announcement.
