Colorado Gov. Jared Polis mingles at the Taste of Ethiopia Festival in northeast Denver on Sunday, Aug. 4.

Editor's note: This story has been updated to clarify details of the Polis for Colorado committee.

Gov. Jared Polis, fresh off the news that the effort to recall him had failed, sent out a fundraising email, asking to help defeat other recall efforts.

The donations are directed to a candidate committee, Polis for Colorado. That panel was terminated last January, but the 2022 committee for Polis uses the same identification number as the terminated committee and has the reports that have been filed all along for the 2022 election cycle.

The fundraising email was sent out less than three hours after Dismiss Polis and Resist Polis, which circulated petitions calling for his ouster, announced that they did not get the 631,266 valid signatures needed to put the recall question on the ballot.

"The good news is that, as of yesterday [sic], they have failed to submit the required number of signatures against me," the Polis email said. "But the bad news is that they are still trying to recall several state senators and have left a foundation that other groups can use to try to subvert the will of the people again, so we need to stay ready to fight back.

"Will you consider chipping in $5 today to make sure we have the resources to fight back immediately against another recall attempt?"

The other recalls target three Democratic state senators:

  • Sen. Pete Lee of Colorado Springs, petitions due Sept. 10;
  • Sen. Brittany Pettersen of Lakewood, petitions due Sept. 16;
  • and Senate President Leroy Garcia of Pueblo, petitions due Oct. 18.

Two issue committees — Our Colorado Way of Life and Democracy First Colorado — have raised $879,352 to combat the recall efforts. But Polis' email directs the money to his election committee. Polis also sent out a fundraising email in July for the recall effort, also directing donations to his campaign committee.
