Donald Trump took nearly an hour to meet with The Gazette’s editorial board six months ago, pitching his vision of becoming president of the United States. As a man who grew up in Queens and made his money in construction, he did not talk or act like a politician. He had never been elected to anything.

We liked him but doubted we were spending so much close-up time with our next president.

Friday, he became the 45th president of the United States with a powerful swearing-in speech unlike anything this country has heard.

The ceremony was a testament to our country’s routine ability to transition power from one White House occupant to the next. Former President Bill Clinton was on hand, along with former Trump opponent Hillary Clinton. Former Presidents George W. Bush and Jimmy Carter attended.
