Colorado's lawmakers are joining the debate over plastic drinking straws.

House Bill 1143 is set to be debated Feb. 11 before the House Energy and Environment committee.

The bill would prohibit restaurants from giving people plastic straws unless a customer asks for one.

The measure reflects growing concern that discarded plastic straws are making their way into the environment, endangering wildlife. A 2015 video of a sea turtle with a straw embedded in its nose went viral.

Some argue that straws are needed by some disabled people who need them to drink.
