The head of a bank with 84 branches in metro Denver says he’s pretty sure he could lick President Donald Trump (politics-wise).
“I think I could beat Trump,” Jamie Dimon, chief executive of J.P. Morgan Chase & Co., said while answering questions at a charity-promotional event held Wednesday at the financial giant’s New York headquarters, per CNBC.
“I’m as tough as he is, I’m smarter than he is,” he added. “I would be fine. He could punch me all he wants. It wouldn’t work with me. I’d fight right back.”
He added: “I grew up in a poorer part of Queens than he did, but I am a banker. I am part of the elite. … I don’t think the American public looks at Trump as part of the elite. They look at him as the upstart who punched the elite in the nose every day.”
Dimon also threw shade on Trump as a businessman: “And by the way, this wealthy New Yorker (pointing to himself) actually earned his money. It wasn’t a gift from Daddy.”
Chase later walked back his supposed presidential ambitions, saying: “I should not have said it. I’m not running for president.”
J.P Morgan Chase is the parent of Chase Bank, which the Denver Business Journal ranks as the fourth-largest in metro Denver by local deposits, with $10.7 billion as of mid-2017. Only Wells Fargo, FirstBank and U.S. Bank are bigger in the metro area.
Chase is also the largest U.S. bank by assets.
The company’s stock (NYSE: JPM) was up narrowly in early trading Thursday.
Dimon is well known for speaking his mind and stirring controversy, as he did last year when he told analysts that it was “almost an embarrassment to be an American citizen traveling around the world and listening to the stupid s— we have to deal with in this country.”
To no one’s surprise, that other wealthy New Yorker fired back early Thursday on Twitter.
“The problem with banker Jamie Dimon running for President is that he doesn’t have the aptitude or ‘smarts’ & is a poor public speaker & nervous mess – otherwise he is wonderful,” Trump tweeted.
He added: ” I’ve made a lot of bankers, and others, look much smarter than they are with my great economic policy!”
