Cory Gardner

Republican U.S. Sen. Cory Gardner speaks at a town hall Aug. 15, 2017, at Pikes Peak Community College in Colorado Springs.

He couldn't have expected an endorsement, but U.S. Sen. Cory Gardner was put "on notice" by a liberal group Friday that he faces a 2020 ouster.

Emily's List, the high-profile national group that backs candidates who support abortion rights, said the incumbent Colorado Republican is one of six U.S. senators it hopes to help defeat next year.

Emily's List raises campaign dollars and boasts of a membership of 5 million. "On Notice" is the name of its 2020 campaign.

The group said it's working to find and fund women candidates to run in the targeted districts.

U.S. Rep. Scott Tipton, a Republican from Cortez, is one of 43 House Republicans Emily's List is out to get, as well.

“After flipping the House with Democratic women in 2018, we’re ready to send more Republicans packing in 2020," Stephanie Schriock, president of Emily's List, said in a statement.

"These members have loyally supported their party’s harmful agenda, advancing policies -- such as attempting to repeal access to affordable health care -- that harm working families in their districts," Schriock said. "While Speaker Pelosi and House Democrats are working hard to pass legislation that will directly improve the lives of women and children, House Republicans are trying to impede progress wherever they can."

"It’s not exactly a surprise to see liberal organizations say they want to support liberal candidates to replace someone like Cory Gardner as he has built such a strong bipartisan record of fighting for Coloradans in the Senate," Casey Contres, Gardner's re-election campaign manager, told Colorado Politics when asked for a response. "Cory will continue to work to advance his proposals that make it easier to pay off student loans, reduce traffic on our congested roads, and increase the number of doctors in rural areas."

The campaign office for Tipton did not have an immediate response.
