Johnston ad - Garcia 2

Samantha Garcia, a graduate of Thornton's Mapleton Expeditionary School of the Arts, says when Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Mike Johnston was the school's principal, he was the first person to tell her he would help her go to college, in a digital ad released on Thursday, June 6, 2019, by the Johnston campaign.

Democrat Mike Johnston’s U.S. Senate campaign on Thursday released the first in series of digital ads featuring testimonials from Coloradans who knew the candidate when he was an educator and state lawmaker.

"The Mike Johnston I know is passionate, is honest, keeps his promise," says Samantha Garcia in the roughly 2-minute video, which a campaign spokeswoman said is set to air across digital platforms including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

In the video, Garcia credits Johnston with being the first person to tell her he would help her go to college when he was principal at Thornton's Mapleton Expeditionary School of the Arts, a public college-preparatory school he founded.

Recalling the first time she met Johnston, at a school-wide assembly when she was in middle school, Garcia says:

“I remember specifically him promising that like by the time we all got to our senior year, we’d be college ready and accepted to four-year schools. I think for a lot of us it was the first time anyone told us like we were all going to go to college. And I know for me personally, it was the first time I believed someone telling me that they were going to help me get there. He believed in us.”

Garcia, who received a bachelor's degree in psychology and communication, says she was the first member of her family to attend college.

She recorded the ad in both English- and Spanish-language versions.

Johnston, who finished in third place in last year's primary for governor, is one of at 12 Democrats running for the chance to challenge Republican U.S. Sen. Cory Gardner in the 2020 election.
