Straight from the mouths of babes. Or was it a famous British prime minister?
The Pueblo County Republican Party website is wielding a meme that is a combination of the two.
Just below a scroll of news stories is a photo of Barron Trump — the president’s youngest son — and a few lines of text.
“Socialism is the philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy. It’s (sic) inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery,” the meme says, attributed to Barron.
But that quotation — or a version of it — is actually credited to Winston Churchill, the British prime minister who served from 1940 through 1945 and again from 1951 through 1955.
Churchill (nicknamed “Winnie”) is often quoted — and, as it happens, often misquoted. (He didn’t say “blood, sweat and tears”; what he actually said was “blood, toil, tears and sweat.”)
It’s believed the quote is a mash-up of two different speeches by the influential world leader reportedly. According to the Churchill Project at Hillsdale College, “it is more or less correct, but it’s a run-together, truncated version of two separate comments.”
In 1948, Winston spoke in Scotland on the subject of socialism, saying:
“Socialism is the philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy.”
And a few years prior, he said to the House of Commons:
“The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings. The inherent virtue of Socialism is the equal sharing of miseries.”
It’s unclear where the meme originated. But it isn’t hard to find on Google, which, if queried correctly, displays memes about Donald Trump Jr.’s infamous Halloween tweet, in which he said he would teach his daughter Chloe about socialism by taking half of her candy and “give it to some kid who sat at home.”
