Colorado’s Greg Lopez named to House Budget, Science committees
U.S. Rep. Greg Lopez has been appointed to the House Budget and Science, Space and Technology committees, the Colorado Republican announced Tuesday.
The newest member of the state’s congressional delegation, Lopez was sworn into office last week after winning a June special election to fill the remainder of former U.S. Rep. Ken Buck’s term.
Lopez said he will take a conservative approach to federal spending on the budget panel while shining a light on his district’s “significant and robust” tech sector as a member of the science panel.
“In today’s political and economic climate, the importance of our federal budget cannot be understated,” Lopez said in a statement. “As a member of the budget committee, I plan to use my voice to advocate for lower federal spending, a balanced budget and responsible, conservative fiscal policy.”
The budget committee’s Republican chairman, U.S. Rep. Jodey Arrington of Texas, welcomed Lopez in a statement: “We are excited to have him join the team as we work to rein in reckless spending, restore economic freedom and unleash American prosperity once again.”
The owner of a company that stocks newly built hospitals with medical equipment, Lopez will serve on the committee’s Healthcare Task Force, his office said.
Lopez called his position on the science committee a good fit for his district, which covers Douglas County, portions of Larimer and Weld counties and Colorado’s’ Eastern Plains.
“I am honored to join the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee,” Lopez said in a statement. “I plan to use my limited time in Congress and on this committee to bring attention to the needs of Colorado’s 4th Congressional District. My district is home to a significant and robust tech and science industry, which I have been granted the opportunity to represent; I intend to amplify the voice of those constituents through my position on this committee.”
U.S. Rep. Frank Lucas, an Oklahoma Republican and the committee’s chairman, said in a statement that he is pleased to welcome Lopez to the panel “as we continue to drive innovation and research crucial to maintaining the United States’ position as a global leader in science and technology.”
Added Lucas: “Lopez will provide a fresh outlook on many of our critical issues, and I look forward to collaborating with him to advance our full agenda.”
Lopez’ fellow Coloradan, Democratic U.S. Rep. Yadira Caraveo of Thornton, also sits on the committee.
Buck, who resigned in March, was a member of the House Foreign Affairs and Judiciary committees.
Lopez, who isn’t seeking election to a full term, is set to serve until Jan. 3, 2025, when House members elected in November will be sworn in. Republican U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert, who moved into the district from the Western Slope earlier this year, faces Democratic nominee Trisha Calvarese in the general election.
