Two-time congressional candidate Casper Stockham said Monday he will try running for Congress for a third time next year – against a different incumbent in a different district.

Colorado Politics told you two weeks ago that Stockham, a Republican, was considering a run against Rep. Jason Crow, D-Aurora, in the 6th Congressional District.

Stockham lost handily to Rep. Diana DeGette in the 1st Congressional District in Denver in 2018 and 2016. The district is one of the safest in the country for a Democrat, but the neighboring district is more competitive.

Crow unseated longtime incumbent Republican Mike Coffman last November. Coffman held the seat for a decade.

Stockham, a motivational speaker and Uber driver, said his campaign would be based on empowerment.

“I believe empowerment is a cornerstone for a better community,” he said Monday. “I believe the homelessness, gentrification, high unemployment, crime and despair have not come at the hands of the Republican Party but because, in part, the GOP has ignored the black and Hispanic communities.”

Stockham, who is black, said Democrats have exploited black and Latino voters for more than 60 years “because there has been a void in those communities of any real Republican Party presence as a balance.”

He said he will “reach out to the forgotten and disenfranchised voters.”

“Congressman Crow is a new face on an old system that only seeks to control and maintain the status quo,” he said. “We do not need new leaders; we need new doers.”

Stockham wouldn’t have to move to run in the new district. When he was running in District 1 over the last four years, he actually lived in District 6, he said. The law allows candidates to live outside the district they’re running to represent.

Former state Rep. Phil Covarrubias, R-Brighton, told Colorado Politics last month he was thinking about getting in the GOP primary to take on Crow, as well.
