The Commerce City Council has joined a handful of Colorado municipalities siding with gun owners and opposing efforts to pass “red flag” gun laws.

The Colorado legislature passed a bill this year to allow law enforcement to take guns from those who demonstrate a risk of harming themselves or others.

The resolution declaring Commerce City a sanctuary for the Second Amendment passed 5-2 Monday night.

Adams County Commissioner Emma Pinter, a Democrat, issued a statement Tuesday saying she was disappointed in city leaders for supporting a resolution to disobey a state law.

“It has only been one month since our state has experienced another school shooting, every day our community is experiencing loss of life to gun violence,” said Pinter, a Democrat and former Westminster City Council member.

“I am bewildered that we cannot agree that people experiencing a mental health crisis should not have access to firearms.”

About 30 counties have adopted resolutions declaring themselves sanctuary counties, meaning they will not enforce the law if signed by the governor. The list includes Weld and El Paso counties.
