Democrat Mike Johnston, a gubernatorial candidate and former state senator, will be holding a bilingual town hall Saturday in Aurora to discuss President Trump’s decision to rescind the DACA program for immigrants brought to the United States illegally as children.

Johnston plans to conduct the meeting in Spanish and English – possibly the first statewide campaign event of its kind in Colorado, his campaign said.

The Trump administration announced Tuesday it would stop processing new applications under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, known as DACA, which was initiated in 2012 by an executive order issued by President Obama. Under the program, nearly 800,000 young immigrants have been granted reprieves from deportation and authorized to work legally in the United States. The administration is giving Congress six months to come up with a legislative fix before the government stops renewing permits for people already covered by the program.

“Since the possibility of rolling back DACA’s protections was first discussed last week in Washington, we have heard from so many in the community who are fearful, and have so many questions about what it might mean for them and their families,” Johnston said in a statement. “Since entering this race in January, I have wanted to host a town hall in Spanish, and this seems like the right time to talk about DACA and other issues.”

Johnston is one of five Democrats running for the office held by Gov. John Hickenlooper, who faces term limits after next year’s election. The others are U.S. Rep. Jared Polis, Lt. Gov. Donna Lynne, former State Treasurer Cary Kennedy and businessman Noel Ginsburg.

The town hall is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at Montview Math and Health Sciences Elementary School, 2055 Moline St., in Aurora.
