Democratic Colorado gubernatorial candidates invited to conservative summit
Four Democratic gubernatorial candidates have been invited to speak at the July Western Conservative Summit, the largest gathering of conservatives outside of Washington, D.C.
U.S. Reps. Ed Perlmutter of Arvada, Jared Polis of Boulder, former state Treasurer Cary Kennedy and former state Sen. Mike Johnston have all been invited to attend. Left out of the invitation was Denver civics leader Noel Ginsburg.
From a campaign strategy standpoint, it doesn’t make much sense for the Democrats to participate as they battle it out in a crowded primary. It could, however, give them thrust in the general election if they survive the primary.
Jeff Hunt, director of the Centennial Institute, which organizes the July Western Conservative Summit, said he wanted to offer a platform for Democratic candidates to reach a wider audience.
“If you desire to be the chief executive of Colorado, it is crucial to build bridges and relationships with all those you are running to represent. As such, we are both hopeful and eager to see many of these candidates at the summit,” Hunt said.
The event boasts high-profile national participants. Last year, Donald Trump attended the summit, as he attempted to woo Colorado voters. He was the first presumptive presidential candidate to attend the annual event in its seven-year history. Trump spoke in a half-filled Colorado Convention Center ballroom.
“Hopefully conservatives will use the summit to try and find a new direction now that maybe they realize their keynote speaker last year, Donald Trump, is a charlatan and cares as little about their ideals as he does democracy at large,” said Craig Hughes, a Johnston campaign consultant.
Johnston is unlikely to attend the summit, according to Hughes.
“Although this is clearly an audience that could gain value in his plan for Colorado to achieve 100 percent renewable energy by 2040,” Hughes quipped.
Johnston recently announced renewable energy plans as Polis was announcing his campaign with a similar proposal.
A spokeswoman for the Polis campaign said, “The campaign just received the invite and will have to look at his calendar.”
A spokesman for the Kennedy campaign declined to comment for this story. A spokesman for the Perlmutter campaign did not immediately respond to whether the congressman would attend the gathering of conservatives.
The three-day Western Conservative Summit is set to kickoff July 21 at the Colorado Convention Center.
Republican gubernatorial candidates confirmed to speak at the Western Conservative Summit include District Attorney George Brauchler, former state Rep. Victor Mitchell, and businessman Doug Robinson.
“We hope our Democratic gubernatorial candidates will take this opportunity to show up and engage with one of the largest, most active blocs of Colorado voters,” Hunt said.
